سبب التسمية: تعود التسمية إلى أن الإمام مالك “وطأه للناس” أي مهّده وسهّله لهم. ويُروى عنه قوله: «عرضت كتابي هذا على سبعين فقيهًا من فقهاء المدينة، فكلهم واطَأَنِي عليه (أي وافقني)، فسميته الموطأ».
قصة التأليف: تشير المصادر التاريخية إلى أن الخليفة العباسي أبي جعفر المنصور طلب من الإمام مالك تدوين كتاب يجمع العلم بطريقة سلسة بعيدة عن التشدد والرخص، ليكون مرجعاً عاماً للناس
